Description:
Important 1852 Wide Date Moffat $10
1852 $10 Moffat & Co. Ten Dollar Repaired, AU Details, NCS. K-9, R.6. This is the Wide Date variety, although incorrectly identified by NCS as a Close Date example. The wide spacing between the 5 and the 2 is the easiest diagnostic. The Moffat & Co. firm was among the earliest of private coiners in California, and they were also one of the most prolific of issuers. Local businessmen in San Francisco approached Moffat & Co. with a need for small coinage. In response, the company issued 8,650 of these coins in the early part of the year. The reverse is inscribed 264 grains and 880 fine, for a net of 232.3 grains pure gold, or about 1/10th of a grains more than a Federal ten-dollar piece. This is a pleasing example with light yellow coloration and considerable retained luster. The repair mentioned by NCS is located on the right obverse rim and at Liberty's neck.
