Description:
Choice Proof 1863 Coronet Eagle
1863 $10 PR64 PCGS. A sterling coin for the numismatist who appreciates quality, rarity and beauty. The devices are well frosted by the dies, with the surrounding mirror fields well preserved. Liberty's cheek and neck are very clean for the grade, with no distracting nicks or hairlines. As the Civil War unfolded, demand for proof coins dropped as reflected in the paltry mintage of 30 pieces for the year 1863. The present example is housed in an older PCGS green label holder, which predates the Cameo and Deep Cameo categories now used by PCGS. NGC not graded any examples of this date without their Cameo or Ultra Cameo designations, and with so few struck it makes sense that the dies retained their heavy cameo producing frost through the entire mintage of 30 pieces.
This particular coin is identifiable by a couple of copper spots, one each below the first and last star, another touching the lower right of the 8, and a very minor lint mark which extends from the Y of LIBERTY through most of Liberty's curls toward her eye. On the reverse there is a dark spot located at the junction of the upper leaves and the eagle's tail, which has been partially removed. The combined NGC and PCGS population reports show 15 pieces graded this high (including all Cameo categories) with a scant 2 coins seen finer. A foremost opportunity to put away an American classic, and one of the most difficult Proof eagles for a collector to obtain.(#8799) (Registry values: P5) (NGC ID# 28EZ, PCGS# 8799)
