Description:
Rare, Near-Mint 1879-O Twenty Dollar
1879-O $20 AU58 NGC. The 1879-O is one of the few truly rare coins in all grades in the Coronet series of Double Eagles. It is the only New Orleans Type Three Twenty and as such it is a very popular and desirable issue. Its mintage was a minuscule 2,325 pieces. Most are seen in the Very Fine to Extremely Fine range and typically show heavily abraded prooflike surfaces. In addition, many have mint-made alloying spots and/or grease stains on the surfaces. Survivors number in the area of 80 to 90 coins. Near-mint pieces such as this are very rare and merit a mid R.7 rating with an estimated 7-9 pieces believed extant, and another four (or possibly a few more) in Uncirculated.
The surfaces are still frosty and noticeably reflective as is sometimes seen on this issue. Very well struck and exceptionally clean with suggestions of very little circulation. Both sides show hazy orange-gold color and have some light underlying hairlines. As an identifier on this rare coin, there is an area of small grease stains just under the eagle's left (facing) wing. Bright golden-yellow color overall.(#8990) (Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 26B8, PCGS# 8990)
