Description:
Finest Certified 1876 Eagle PR65 Ultra Cameo NGC
1876 $10 PR65 Ultra Cameo NGC. The Philadelphia Mint struck 45 proof Eagles in 1876, a bit more than usual for the era because of the Centennial Exposition held that year in Philadelphia. The Mint had a table at the Expo, and offered proofs to attendees. These are rarely seen today, and Heritage has not offered a proof 1876 since the 2002 FUN Signature, nearly four years ago. The third party populations for the proof 1876 Eagle are clearly inflated by resubmissions at the PR64 level, since the total population in this grade is a combined 21 pieces at NGC and PCGS. However, as of (9/05), only the present piece has been certified in PR65 or higher grades, with or without a Cameo or Ultra Cameo designation.
This beautifully preserved Gem is noteworthy for its seamless frost throughout the devices and legends, and because the preservation is exceptional, it can be identified only by a short diagonal lintmark (as made) southeast of the 6 in the date. Interestingly, the date exhibits recutting on the 8 and 6 in the date, visible beneath the peak of those digits. Presumably, the piece was among the first proofs struck, and evidence of the recutting rapidly faded, since the cataloger could not locate a prior reference to a repunched date variety among the rare prior appearances of the proof issue.(#98816) (Registry values: P4) (PCGS# 98816)
