Description:
Gem Ultra Cameo Proof 1876 Quarter Eagle
1876 $2 1/2 PR65 Ultra Cameo NGC. Like all of the 1876 gold specimen strikings, only 45 proof Quarter Eagles were struck. And also like the other gold issues (save for the Double Eagle), very few business strikes were produced--only 4,176 pieces in fact. Both Breen and Taglione suggest that perhaps as many as 24 proofs survive today in all grades. In order to distinguish proofs from singly struck business strikes, one must examine the profile of Liberty. On business strikes, there is a raised bar (from foreign matter adhering to the hub when the obverse die was sunk from it) at the neck next to the jaw on business strikes, but proofs lack this feature. This is a beautiful, deeply mirrored proof that has sharply contrasted, frosted devices. Some milky patina is noted in the protected areas and fields on the obverse and a few scattered hairlines are visible in the reverse field. About 40 degrees of clockwise die rotation is also seen. Population: 1 in 65 Ultra Cameo, 1 finer (10/05).(Registry values: P4) (NGC ID# 287X, PCGS# 97902)
