Description:
German-Silver 1853 Cent, Judd-150
1853 E1C One Cent, Judd-150 Thick, Pollock-178, Low R.7, PR64 NGC. 57.0 grains. This small cent pattern was struck in German silver. The metallurgical composition is stated on the holder as: 62% copper, 30% nickel, and 8% zinc. Struck with a reeded edge. The German silver alloy was a candidate to replace the copper large cent, but instead, copper-nickel emerged triumphant. This experimental piece paired the regular dies of the quarter eagle with a wreath reverse that bears the denomination ONE CENT. A sharply struck piece with light tan toning and smooth surfaces. (PCGS# 11624)
