Description:
Elusive Gem 1828 Small Date Dime
1828 10C Small Date MS65 NGC. JR-1, R.2. The dimes of this year are encountered in only two varieties, the Small Date JR-1 and the Large Date JR-2. These are sometimes known as the Large Size and Small Size. They are actually different subtypes that vary, not only in the style of the date logotype, but also in their size, borders, edges, and the equipment used to produce them. The Small Size dimes, and those of subsequent years, were struck in a "close collar," an innovation of Mint Engraver William Kneass that is essentially a die for the edge of the coin. The close collar imparted a reeded edge and provided greater uniformity in each coin's diameter from year to year.
Each obverse die is mated to a different reverse die in a "monogamous marriage," as it were. The two date styles are readily distinguished: The Small Date issue has a square base 2 that is considerably closer to the first 8 than the second. The Large Date has a curled base 2 that is about equidistant between the 8s. The Large Date reverse shows the second T in STATES between RI in PLURIBUS; the Small Date reverse shows the second T squarely above the R.
This lovely Gem shows golden patina on both sides, with patches of russet. Decent luster radiates from beneath, and the strike is boldly executed. Few signs of post-strike contact are evident. This is a middle die state, with the reverse crack from the E of UNITED to the motto ribbon. Gems of this issue are infrequently offered, an opportunity that the Bust dime specialists in our midst will no doubt recognize. The combined population at NGC and PCGS is five pieces in MS65, with two finer (6/06).(Registry values: N4719) (PCGS# 4510)
