Description:
Attractive Near-Mint 1861 Double Eagle
1861 $20 AU58 NGC. This is the highest mintage Type One double eagle, with a total production of just under 3 million coins. In fact, it has the highest mintage of any double eagle issued before 1904, and the total face value of nearly 60 million dollars was the highest total of any single United States coinage issue until 1904. Until the discovery of the S.S. Brother Jonathan and S.S. Central America treasures, this date was handily the most plentiful of any Type One double eagle, and the obvious choice for type collectors. The Wyoming Collection specimen is a lovely example with smooth, mark-free surfaces and rich orange-gold luster. All of the design elements are boldly defined, exhibiting exceptional detail. Heavy clash marks from the rays are visible behind Liberty's head. The digit 8 in the date is centered beneath the JBL initials. More discussion regarding the obverse and reverse dies can be found in the listing for the 1861 Paquet double eagle.
