Description:
Rare 1797 13 Stars Half Dime
1797 H10C 13 Stars Fine 15 NGC. V-1, LM-4, R.6. This is the rarest of four varieties for the year, and it is the only die variety of the design type with 13 stars on the obverse. Both sides have prominent clash marks, and the reverse has the top of A in STATES filled. The surfaces are pleasing for the grade, with only a few faint scratches on each side. Both sides have delightful gold and gray color with splashes of faint bluish toning. Silver and gold coinage from the first decade of Mint operations had varying star counts, each star representing a new state in the Union. When Tennessee was admitted as the 16th state in 1796, an additional star was added to the coinage designs for the various denominations. Soon, it was realized that adding another star for each state would be an impossibility, and the star count was reduced to 13 stars, representing the original 13 states. Of course, there are exceptions to the 13 star rule, usually by mistake, although some issues such as the 1817 15 Stars large cent appear to be intentional, although it is not known for what reason.(Registry values: P6) (NGC ID# 22ZZ, PCGS# 4260)
