Description:
Finest Certified Proof 1831 Capped Bust Dime
1831 10C PR67 NGC. JR-2. The 1831 dime is clearly the most plentiful of all proof Capped Bust dimes with a total of 13 pieces graded by NGC and 13 more by PCGS. Among all 26 coins, this Superb Gem proof is the only one to receive the PR67 grade. It is the finest certified proof 1831 dime. Proofs are known for both the JR-2 and JR-4 varieties, although Walter Breen only recorded a single variety for proofs, known as Breen 4-E.
A minor design change took place in 1831 with the reverse modified from three pale gules to two pale gules. In heraldic terms, a gule is the vertical stripe in a shield, and a pale is an individual line in the gule. Thus the description "three pale gules" means that each vertical stripe in the shield has three lines, and similarly for "two pale gules." Proofs are known of both types.
This Superb Gem has exquisite design definition on both sides. Hair curls, stars, eagle's feathers, claws, and the shield are all boldly detailed. The obverse has pale gold, lilac, and blue color, while the reverse has vibrant amber, blue, and violet. The fields are fully mirrored around lustrous devices with excellent contrast, although the deep toning on both sides has prevented a Cameo designation. In 1989, David Akers called this piece "An incredible, one-of-a-kind coin that is tantalizingly close to absolute perfection." Census: 1 in 67, 0 finer (11/06).
Ex: Auction '89 (David Akers, 7/1989), lot 1047. (NGC ID# 27D3, PCGS# 4553)
