Description:
MS61 1811 Half Eagle, Tall 5
1811 $5 Tall 5 MS61 NGC. Breen-6463, BD-1, High R.3. The two varieties of 1811 half eagle are easily distinguished by the height of the 5 in the denomination. The Bass-Dannreuther Early U.S. Gold Coin Varieties 1795-1834 estimates that the present Tall 5 variety is a bit scarcer, at 175-250 pieces known, than the Small 5 (225-300 known). An 1810-dated obverse was also paired with this Tall 5 reverse, one of two for 1810. The shared 1811 reverse is identifiable by three squat, squashed dentils directly under the 5. The present example shows no trace of circulation, as expected for the grade, but the surfaces are somewhat lackluster, with a few light scrapes and ticks on each side. The area around STATES and the motto on the reverse is somewhat softly struck. Both sides exhibit light, even reddish patina.(Registry values: P2) (PCGS# 8110)
