Description:
'Sleeper' 1839 Classic Head Quarter Eagle, AU55
1839 $2 1/2 AU55 NGC. Breen-6148, R.3. The year 1839 is a historic one in U.S. numismatics. The New Orleans Mint was completed and struck its first gold coins, and Adam Eckfeldt, who was hired at the Philadelphia Mint in 1792, began working part-time after 25 years as chief coiner. The 1839 quarter eagle is, according to Garrett and Guth, "the sleeper rarity of the series." This is likely due in part to the absence of a mintmark, which leads many collectors to lump it with common P-mint coinage. Another possible reason is confusion over whether the issue is an overdate. Some authorities have called it an overdate, while Garrett and Guth say it was produced by a defective date punch. This piece offers lustrous green-gold surfaces with no singular impairments.(Registry values: P3) (NGC ID# 25G2, PCGS# 7698)
