Description:
Scarce 1855-C Half Eagle, XF45
1854-C $5 XF45 PCGS. Variety 22-J. Even by the standards of the issue, this is not an especially well struck 1854-C half eagle. It shows some flatness on the curls around the face although the rest of the obverse has acceptable detail. The reverse has flatness visible on the eagle's leg at the right and on the arrow feathers. However, the mintmark is fully visible and strongly impressed. The surfaces are clean and choice except for a small horizontal mark across the cheek; the reverse has a number of small areas of mint-made roughness surrounding the eagle. These are fairly extensive but shallow. There is a good amount of luster remaining and it is satiny in texture; the color is a light to medium yellow-gold hue. This is a solid coin for the date and grade with enough detail and luster to perhaps qualify as an AU by today's standards. Housed in an old green label PCGS holder.
The 1854-C is the scarcest Charlotte half eagle from this decade and it is one of the most challenging issues in the series to locate in higher grades. Many of the pieces that grade AU and better have weak mintmarks and these are not considered as desirable as the strong mintmark coins by collectors.
