Collector News
The Delbert McDougal Saint-Gaudens Collection

Heritage is proud to present the Delbert McDougal Set of $20 Saint-Gaudens Coins as a part of our January F.U.N. Signature Auction, to take place on January 4-7, 2006 in Orlando, Florida.

West Texas native Delbert McDougal is a great American success story. Retiring from a corporate career after 25 years at General Electric, a small investment in local real estate grew into a significant regional real estate development conglomerate that houses thousands of residents in the Lubbock area and has revitalized the community. Now diversified into construction, rental, realty, and maintenance companies, Mr. McDougal is a community leader in the finest tradition, and his contributions have been recognized by many awards.

Mr. McDougal started collecting coins "on a small basis in early 1993 strictly for pleasure." Being a methodical person, he carefully investigated the Saint-Gaudens series, as well as considering foreign coins (due to extensive world travel). The same attention to detail that Mr. McDougal's applied to his business is evident in his extraordinary selections for his coin collection.

The first thing that will catch your eye from this collection is Mr. McDougal's 1927-D Double Eagle. In November, the Superb Morse specimen of this ultra-rare and valuable coin realized nearly $1.9 million. Mr. McDougal's coin is a beautiful Gem, graded MS65 by NGC, and it has a realistic chance to bring a seven figure price as well.

Other highlights from this outstanding collection of Saint-Gaudens Twenties include:

This collection and the rest of the F.U.N. Signature Auction are open for bidding right now at www.HeritageGalleries.com/Coins.

Million Dollar Coins Sold at Auction in 2005

More 7-figure coins were sold at auction in 2005 than in all previous years combined, and Heritage Galleries & Auctioneers (HG&A) dominated the list. We're very proud that out of all eleven seven-figure coins sold at auction in 2005, Heritage sold six of them. But even more impressive is that we were responsible for all four of the top four.

2005 has been the best year in Heritage's history. We are, far and away, the leading auction firm for coins, currency, comics and original comic art, and vintage movie posters, and we are now the number three auction firm nationwide. This year has seen an exciting growth trend in such diverse areas as fine and decorative arts, sports collectibles, political memorabilia and Americana, celebrity, music and entertainment memorabilia, and autographs, and we are poised to expand into several other areas in 2006.

The top eleven coins sold at auction in 2005 were:

Website Tips: How to refine your searches using MyWantlist

If you're familiar with conducting searches through the Heritage website, you'll know that searches are performed using a text match ? which essentially means that you are looking for an exact match between the criteria you enter into the search box and the description of the item in our database. This provides for a bit of flexibility if you wish to use it, limited by your imagination. For some tips to performing searches accurately, please take a look at our Search Tips page.

However, the best way to perform searches is by using our MyWantlist feature. This feature is absolutely free with membership, and it allows you to select from exactly the same categories as any of our other searches. Enter the criteria you wish to search; in the pictured example, we're looking for 1874-S Double Eagles graded AU or higher. If you wish to save the search to your MyWantlist, by all means click on the "Add New Item" button, but if you merely want to search, simply click on the "Preview Search Results" link.

This search capability works only with US coins at this time. But watch in the future for more flexible search capabilities in many areas as Heritage continues to offer you the best website technologies, designed expressly for collectors like you!

Numismatic Glossary:

Lazy Deuce: Slang for certain $2 National Bank Notes, so-called because their obverse features a large numeral 2 on its side.

Educational Note: Silver Certificate of the series of 1896. Issued in denominations of $1, $2, and $5, these notes featured allegorical representations of educational instruction and progress. Only issued for three years, they are generally considered the most beautiful notes ever issued by the US, and command a very nice premium whenever they appear for sale.

Heritage to Offer Many Significant Pedigree Comics!

Heritage Galleries & Auctioneers (HG&A) will auction a number of CGC-graded, Golden Age pedigreed comics in their upcoming Comic and Original Comic Art Signature Auction, to be held January 19-21, 2006, in Dallas, Texas.

"Included in this auction are many excellent examples of the finest pedigreed books known to exist," said Ed Jaster, Vice-President for HG&A. "These are books that any collector would be proud to own."

"The legendary Mile High Collection is represented by several sterling examples in this upcoming auction," said Jaster, "including gorgeous copies of such desirable books as Lev Gleason's Daredevil Comics #1, CGC-graded NM 9.4 with White pages, More Fun Comics #73 - the first appearance of Green Arrow and Speedy, as well as the origin and first appearance of Aquaman - CGC-graded NM 9.4 with White pages, and Flash Comics #1, CGC-graded NM+ 9.6 with Off-white to white pages."

"Another highly respected pedigree is the Crowley Collection," said Jaster, "and we're pleased to present a number of stunning books that bear this impressive designation. Offered in this auction are such choice specimens as Whiz Comics #54, CGC-graded NM/MT 9.8 with Off-white pages, Jackie Robinson Comics #4, CGC-graded NM/MT 9.8 with Off-white pages, and Wow Comics #69, the last issue of that title, CGC-graded NM 9.4 with Off-white pages.

"Another impressive pedigree is the Vancouver Collection," Jaster said. "Less well-known than some others, due to its largely being held in private hands for years, these books are being released into the collectors market for the very first time. As nice as the best of the Mile High books, the comics in the Vancouver Collection should prove extremely attractive to high-grade collectors. Some of the gems of this collection include Namora #1, CGC-graded NM/MT 9.8 with White pages, Four Color #161 Tarzan and the Fires of Tohr, CGC-graded NM/MT 9.8 with White pages, Western Comics #5, CGC-graded NM+ 9.6 with White pages, and Super-Magician Comics V1 #9, CGC-graded NM+ 9.6 with White pages.

"All in all," Jaster continued, "this is an exceptional auction for anyone interested in high-grade and finest-known specimens of significant Golden Age comics. Come January, I expect to see quite a lot of bidding activity on these lovely books."

Is It Time To Sell?

Heritage Loves Palm Beach!

Heritage loves Florida, and well we should. Since 1991, we have sold more than $150 million in rare coins and currency at our auctions in Florida. Of course, our auctions at the Florida United Numismatists conventions are now legendary - especially the record-smashing events we held in 2004 and 2005.

Our first two visits to Palm Beach resulted in auctions totalling nearly $20 million, and although we were forced to move our November 2005 Signature Auction to Dallas at the last minute because of Huricane Wilma, we are so excited about this great numismatic venue that we are returning twice during 2006. We are now accepting consignments for our next Palm Beach Signature Auction, to take place on March 1-4, but the deadline of January 19 is fast approaching. Palm Beach is one of America's fabled cities of wealth, and we already have more than $2 million consigned to this auction, so your success is already assured.

Heritage is the largest auctioneer of rare coins and currency in the world, and we reach more than 160,000 registered numismatic bidders on our website. To take advantage of the strongest market in decades, all you have to do is call. We will take care of all the details necessary to help you achieve the highest possible prices for your rare coins and currency.

Call our Consignor Hotline, at 1-800-872-6467, extension 222, today!
