Shoshana II - September 5, 2012

Shoshana II, the second half of the incredible Shoshana Collection of Ancient Judaean Coins, is complete and is now available both online and in a "hard copy" catalog. Shoshana II will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 5, during the Long Beach Coin & Collectibles show in Long Beach, CA. The Shoshana Collection, assembled over a 30-year period by a Southern California collector, comprises coins related to the founding of Ancient Israel and the story of the Jewish people in the Holy Land. Part 1 of the Shoshana Collection, March 8-9, produced several world records, including $1.1 million for a "prototype" shekel of the Jewish War struck in the first year of conflict, 66 CE, one of two known examples. Two other coins also sold for just under $1 million each and altogether the 712 coins realized $7.6 million.

Like Shoshana I, the September 5 offering will be divided between several phases of Judaean history:

  • Persian Period (480-333 BC) The first primitive coins, many of them copies of the famous Athens "owl" coinage, were struck at Holy Land mints such as Gaza, Samaria and Jerusalem.
  • Yehud Period (333-150 BC) Tiny coins stamped with the name "Yehud" (Judah, or "land of the Jews") in archaic Hebrew letters were minted in the region under the authority of the Hellenistic Greek kingdoms.
  • Maccabean Kingdom (135-37 BC) Ruled by descendants of Judah Maccabee, was the first autonomous Hebrew kingdom to mint coins.
  • Herodian Kingdom (37 BC - 93 AD) Ruled by Herod the Great and his descendents effectively as vassals of Rome.
  • Jewish War (66-70 AD) A titanic uprising against Roman tyranny that shook the Empire to its core;
  • Bar Kokhba Revolt (132-135 AD) The final major rebellion against Roman rule in the Holy Land.
  • Judaea Capta Coins struck by the Romans to propagandize the subjugation of Judaea
  • City Coins Struck under Roman, Byzantine, Islamic and Crusader authority by cities in the Holy Land from circa 37 BC to 1187 AD.

Here are a few highlights from the Shoshana II:

As with all Heritage Signature Auctions, you have many options for bidding. If you have any questions about the sale or would like a copy of the catalog, please contact Dave Michaels by email, DMichaels@HA.com, or phone at (310) 492-8615.

Pompeia's Pick

The Zeugitania Silver Shekel at Face Value: Is it Hannibal or Heracles(-Melquart)?

ZEUGITANIA. Carthage. Time of Hannibal Barca (ca. 221-201 BC). AR shekel (23mm, 6.64 gm, 12h).
ZEUGITANIA. Carthage. Time of Hannibal Barca (ca. 221-201 BC). AR shekel (23mm, 6.64 gm, 12h).
This coin is featured in our September 7 auction of Ancient coins (lot 24874). Is it a man or a myth? The head is widely believed to be that of the Carthaginian General Hannibal Barca delineated as the Tyrian city-god Heracles-Melquart on the obverse, the reverse bearing an image of the Elephas maximus asurus or "Syrian Elephant" (the species described by Marcus Porcius Cato and related by Pliny the Elder as the personal elephant of Hannibal.) The difficulty in absolute identification is that there are no portraits that positively depict the living Hannibal; however Pliny (the Elder) mentions that "there may be seen in Rome three statues of Hannibal..." We can really only compare the extant marble bust of Hannibal from Capua with the coins identified as either Hannibal, [father] Hamilcar, [brother] Hasdrubal or Heracles-Melquart.

The face on the coin is, in my opinion, too 'realistic' to be a stylized strike of a deity-the nasolabial fold(s); furrowed brow ridge(s), leonine curls; what emerges from the compilation of these non-artistic components is a portrait of a very Mediterranean Caucasoid visage-safely assuming that [aristocratic] Hannibal is a better than average representation of the Libyo-Phoenician Carthaginian aristocratic class. With the absence of very definitive physical traits or defects-i.e. the ophthalmic injury affecting his right eye-represented in the face itself, it is very difficult to completely ascertain if we are looking at a man or a myth. This being said, I think it prudent to examine secondary, if not tertiary characteristics of the coin in deciding if it depicts Hannibal or Heracles-(Melquart).

Very few of the elephants, whether they were the smaller African subspecies from the Atlas Mountains or the Syrian subspecies of the Asian elephant survived the trek through the Western Alps; however, a contemporary account tells us that Hannibal's personal elephant Suros, "The Syrian," survived. The Ptolemies seized as part of their war booty from their Syrian campaigns, some Indian elephants and it is in this perspective that it is likely that some descendants of those elephants eventually ended up in Carthage as Egypt and Carthage enjoyed both political and commercial stability at that time. The elephant on the reverse might be viewed as a Barcid 'family crest' of some description, therefore adding a more 'human' element to the image on the obverse.
