Currency auction leads off three Platinum Nights at ANA
You have come to expect Heritage's Platinum Night sessions to offer the very best that numismatics has to offer, and our Official Auctions at the 2014 Chicago ANA World's Fair of Money will certainly not disappoint. Platinum Night for Currency is Wednesday, August 6 at 6:30 PM, with additional Platinum Nights for US Coins and World & Ancient Coins following on Thursday, August 7 and Friday, August 8 respectively.

Highlighting this auction is no less than the first piece of United States federal currency ever issued, a truly fantastic note which has been off the market since its last auction appearance in 1970. This Series 1861 $10 Demand Note is one of only three Fr. 7a's known, and is additionally the only serial number 1 with the handwritten "For The" known from any of the issuing locations. Although many notes claim the title of "first" note issued by the United States, this is unquestionably the real deal, as the handwritten "For The" Demand Notes were the first of the Demand Notes, with the initial issue starting in 1861 while the "Greenback" Legal Tender Notes were not issued until 1862.

Fr. 7a $10 1861 Demand Note PMG Very Fine 30 EPQ

A $100 1882 Brown Back note from The Union NB of Chicago is a fabulous note, and one of a literal handful of $100 Brown Backs from any location to receive a grade of 66PPQ or EPQ from either of the two major grading services. After a full decade of third party grading, PCGS has graded exactly one $100 Brown Back at the Gem New 66PPQ level and one at one point higher.

Chicago, IL - $100 1882 Brown Back Fr. 520 The Union NB Ch. # 3278

At a PMG certified Very Fine 20, the finer of two known Fr. 1175 $20 1882 Gold Certificates, countersigned in pen by Thomas C. Acton, presents possibly the last opportunity to obtain an autographed countersigned $20 Gold for the remainder of this generation. Only 14,000 notes were issued with the pen signed countersignature before the plates were changed to include Acton's engraved signature.

Fr. 1175 $20 1882 Gold Certificate PMG Very Fine 20

Just a few of the many additional highlights of this auction include:

Hessler SCE12 Fr. 268 1896 $5 Silver Certificate Face Proof New
Fr. 268 $5 1896 Silver Certificate PCGS Superb Gem New 67PPQ, Serial Number 56

Alexander the Great's conquests eventually carried him all the way to the Indian subcontinent and established a Greek presence there that persisted for nearly four centuries. The region was first controlled by Alexander's general Seleucus and his descendants. By 240 BC, the regions encompassing modern Afghanistan and northern India had broken from Seleucid rule and became independent under their own line of kings, which were showcased in a series of coin portraits of astonishing power and realism.

Greatest of these was Eucratides, ca. 171-145 BC, whose vast realm was larger than any other Greek-ruled kingdom of the time. Eucratides struck silver coins in vast numbers and many survive today. His gold coins, however, are exceedingly rare, with fewer than 20 specimens known altogether. We are fortunate enough to be able to offer one such piece in our August 8 ANA World and Ancient Coins Platinum Night Auction in Chicago, from The Lexington Collection of Jonathan K. Kern.

This magnificent piece depicts Eucratides as a general wearing a broad-brimmed helmet, greatly resembling a modern-day British explorer in a pith helmet. The portrait, rendered in sculptural high relief, is nearly photographic in its realism and exemplifies the virtuosity achieved by the artisans of this far-flung Greek enclave. The monogram in the lower right of the reverse is not listed in the standard references, and this is one of only six known examples of this coin with this monogram. Certified Gem Mint State by NGC with both strike and surfaces rated at 5/5 and fine style, this is perhaps the finest known of all gold coins of this king.
