1791 1C Washington Small Eagle Cent MS63 Brown PCGS. Baker-16, R.3. The Small Eagle cent is one of the few Washington pieces that actually shows a denomination. Designed in England by John Gregory Hancock, these pieces were proposed as federal contract coinage. Upon seeing an example, Washington rejected the coin as monarchial. However, many pieces were given out to Cabinet officials, senators, and representatives. Eventually, many of the 1,500 pieces struck circulated as coinage. An exceptionally struck and lovingly preserved chocolate-brown representative. Encapsulated in a green label holder. Listed on page 59 of the 2004 Guide Book. (PCGS# 705)

1783 1C Washington Unity States Cent AU50 PCGS. Baker-1, R.1. A briefly circulated representative of this popular backdated Washington piece, which mimics the bushy wreath of the 1793 Large Cent. The obverse border has moderate roller marks, as usual for the issue, and the reverse has a trio of minor pinscratches. A hint of verdigris does not distract. Listed on page 59 of the 2004 Guide Book. (PCGS# 689)

Glimmers of faded red color are noted on both sides, although deep and consistent lavender-brown patina consumes most of both sides. Refreshingly undisturbed, and worthy of close inspection from the enthusiast of early American copper. (PCGS# 1069)

1873-CC 50C Arrows AU50 PCGS. Small Mintmark. The 1873-CC was a heavily circulated issue and very few examples are known in high grades (AU and better). All 1870-1874 CC halves are weakly struck on the obverse, but on this particular piece that is held to a minimum with only slight softness seen on the upper portion of Liberty's head and the upper stars. Bright overall with light gray-golden patina on each side. (PCGS# 6344)

The only contact mark that is remotely useful for pedigree purposes is a tick on the scroll below the E in UNITED. Friction is generally limited to the legs and arms of Liberty. 1858 P1C Flying Eagle Cent, Judd-193, Pollock-236, Snow-PT11, R.5, PR65 PCGS. The obverse is identical to the regular issue 1858 Small Letters cent. The reverse, while similar to that adopted for the Indian cent in 1860, displays a broad, ornamented shield at the top. Struck from slightly rotated dies in copper-nickel with a plain edge. A beautiful golden-brown Gem that has wisps of olive color in the obverse field. The strike is needle-sharp, and the surfaces are impressively undisturbed. Encapsulated in a first generation PCGS holder. Population: 8 in 65, none finer (3/04). (PCGS# 11844)

Breen states in his Encyclopedia that this issue is very rare, and while that may be an exaggeration it is much less available than the 1723 Farthings. Essentially undisturbed by contact, and the few mint-made planchet streaks are faint and unobtrusive. Well struck for the type, since the fingers of the seated effigy are apparent and the hair detail of King George is crisp. The base of the G in GORGEIUS is repunched. 1767-A 9DEN French Colonies Copper Sou, RF Counterstamp MS62 Brown PCGS. Breen-701. This issue was minted for the French Caribbean colonies, but not circulated until counterstamped in 1793. Some pieces circulated in Louisiana after they were counterstamped. These coins also saw commercial usage later in East Coast states, probably during Large Cent shortages such as that caused by the War of 1812. The currently offered example is a desirable representative that is well struck on both the host coin and counterstamp, except for the left border of the beaded rim surrounding "RF" and the reverse center opposite the counterstamp. A lustrous and glossy golden-brown representative, essentially devoid of contact aside from the counterstamp. Slightly dished from the counterstamping. This is the only example certified as counterstamped Mint State by PCGS. Listed on page 32 of the 2004 Guide Book. (PCGS# 158637)
