1799 1C VG8 PCGS. S-189, B-3, R.2. The recessed fields of this piece are rather dark, although the letters and devices are a bit lighter and stand out nicely in contrast. The interior devices of both sides are well-defined for the grade; however, there is weakness around the periphery of the obverse, most notably at the tops of LIB, and on the reverse, STATES is largely indistinct. As is often found with early coppers, there is some porosity evident, particularly on the reverse. A key date coin that would fit nicely into a set of early large cents. EAC 4. (PCGS# 1443)

1877 1C AU55 PCGS. Eagle Eye Photo Seal. This key date should garner numerous bids from collectors who are assembling sets in AU condition, a grade that gives the collector maximum design detail at minimal cost. The surfaces are even brown over each side, but it should be noted that with strong magnification faint bits of red can still be made out on the reverse. Sharply detailed with just the slightest friction over the highpoints, there are no singularly mentionable marks on either side.

1909-S 1C MS65 Red PCGS. The second of only two branch mint issues in the Indian cent series, the 1909-S is also a key date with just 309,000 pieces originally produced. Only two reverse dies have been confirmed for this issue. On the present example, the left edge of the mintmark is over the right edge of a denticle. Both sides of this fully original Gem display rich golden-orange luster. The strike is sharp in virtually all areas, although we do note some bluntness of detail at the tips of the obverse feathers. There are no distracting blemishes to report. Housed in a green label PCGS holder.

The surfaces show even orange-red color with a few darker specks (get out your magnifier) on the lower portion of the obverse. A bit weakly defined on the tips of the feathers on the headdress; otherwise, a sharply detailed coin with superior mint luster. Population: 125 in 65, 12 finer (8/06). (PCGS# 2240)

1914-D 1C MS65 Red PCGS. The 1914-D is a transcendent rarity among 20th century coins, meaning it is recognized as rare by collectors of gold, copper, silver, and nickel coinage. Unlike the 1909-S VDB, which is also widely recognized by non-specialists, the 1914-D was not saved in any appreciable numbers in Uncirculated condition. This piece has lovely, original red color--slightly subdued as always seen on this issue--with fully lustrous satin surfaces. Sharply struck with no mentionable abrasions on either side. 1952-D 5C MS67 Five Full Steps NGC. Boldly impressed with evident step definition and nearly mark-free surfaces. The obverse is lightly toned with lilac patina around the legends and golden color in the centers. The reverse color scheme is different, but still attractive, with a dusky golden iridescent patina that emanates from the edges. While not necessarily considered a rarity with full steps, only three of the 160 examples submitted to NGC has merited the designation, this example being the finest. 1964-D 5C MS67 Five Full Steps NGC. The 1964-D Jefferson nickel is a major series rarity with five full steps, and it is unknown with six full steps, according to Bernard Nagengast's The Jefferson Nickel Analyst, second edition (2002). With a full five steps--defined as Full Steps at both services--this is the finest known by a full two points at NGC, and by one point at PCGS (8/06). The first five steps down from the top of Monticello are boldly and fully split, due to an extremely strong central strike. The NGC holder is marked MS67 5FS. The coin is silver-white, with a tinge of gold-blue on each side, and no distracting marks. A coin that will likely remain unsurpassed--and perhaps untied--and as such essential for the finest known Full Step Jefferson registry collection. (PCGS# 84076)

1901-S 25C AU55 NGC. On the basis of eye appeal alone this is a desirable coin, perhaps as lustrous as an AU55 piece is ever found. Yet, when one factors in that this is the much pursued, low mintage key date 1901-S quarter, a coin generally found -- in the rare circumstances when it's found at all -- in grades of Good and even lower, the true quality of this coin starts to become evident. Only a minimum of wear is evident on this beauty, and most of that is located unobtrusively on Liberty's cheek and neck. As mentioned earlier, this is an unusually lustrous piece; indeed, although the luster is broken in the obverse fields, the reverse doesn't appear to have lost a bit of mint frost in its undoubtedly brief foray into the channels of commerce. The obverse shows muted burgundy-gold color around silver-white highlights, while the reverse is essentially white with just a wisp or two of gold. This is an outstanding lightly circulated coin that will fit very well into a high grade Barber set. (PCGS# 5630)

The vast majority entered circulation, and Mint State examples are quite elusive. Census: 71 in 64, 35 finer (8/06).
