1883 T$1 PR63 Cameo ANACS. Frost-white devices provide ready contrast with the prominently mirrored fields. Light mauve and tan-gold toning adorns the borders. The strike is penetrating, without the often encountered incompleteness on Liberty's hair and the eagle's claws. This proof-only issue is the final collectible date of the type, since the 1884 and 1885 are extremely rare.

1853 P1C One Cent, Judd-151, Pollock-178, Low R.6, PR64 NGC. A regular issue Liberty quarter eagle obverse is paired with a pattern reverse, which displays ONE CENT within a laurel wreath. The layout for ONE CENT is awkward, since the two words are widely separated. Struck in a 40% nickel, 60% copper alloy with a reeded edge. Smooth gray fields are unblemished save for slight cloudiness above the C in CENT. (PCGS# 11628)

1855 P1C Flying Eagle Cent, Judd-167 Original, Pollock-193, R.5, XF40 ANACS. A Flying Eagle cent pattern in a large format, featuring a hooked-neck eagle, slanting 5s on the obverse, and ONE CENT in the center of the reverse surrounded by a thick laurel wreath similar to that of a large cent. Struck in copper with a plain edge. A lightly worn medium brown example, possibly spent or kept as a pocket piece. Some marks are noted above the eagle and within the wreath. (PCGS# 11709)

1859 P1C Indian Cent, Judd-226, Pollock-270, High R.6, PR64 PCGS. The oak wreath on the reverse is the same as the Judd-211 reverse, with ONE CENT inside. The obverse is the regular Indian Head cent die of the year. Struck in copper-nickel with a plain edge. The present example has slightly subdued luster with reddish-brown patina. A rare and likely underrated pattern, much like the Judd-228 also in present sale--although this piece is many times rarer. (PCGS# 11928)

1863 2C Two Cents, Judd-305, Pollock-370, R.4, PR61 Red and Brown ANACS. The popular Washington obverse with GOD AND OUR COUNTRY at the top. The reverse resembles the adopted design except the word CENTS is sharply curved, and the bow has no ribbon ends. Struck in bronze with a plain edge. Rich apple-green and orange embrace this well struck piece, which is lightly hairlined and has a minor reverse rim nick at 1 o'clock.

1896 5C Five Cents, Judd-1770, Pollock-1987, Low R.6, PR63 NGC. This Charles Barber design uses a Federal shield as its primary motif. Behind the shield are two crossed poles bearing a liberty cap and eagle. A scroll passing in front of the shield is inscribed LIBERTY. The denomination 5 CENTS is centered within a curved olive sprig on the reverse. Struck in a nickel alloy with a plain edge. This well struck and slightly subdued specimen has a small strike-thru beneath the I in PLURIBUS, and a few pinpoint carbon flecks on the reverse. (PCGS# 62224)

1842 50C Medium Date MS65 NGC. WB-104. This is not one of the distinctively recut or repunched varieties, but numerous fine die cracks are seen around the borders, a common trait on 1842 halves. While rather easily encountered in lower grades, Gems are of the highest order of rarity. Deeply and originally toned with rich golden-gray patina over each side accented by russet and sea-green around the devices. Sharply struck throughout. Wiley and Bugert estimate the rarity at High R.5 in Mint State. (PCGS# 6239)

1862 $5 AU58 PCGS. Unsurprisingly for a coin of which only 4,430 business strikes were minted, this example shows much prooflikeness on both sides. There are many minuscule abrasions, but none are distracting or easily visible without a loupe, save for a couple of ticks in the left obverse field and one in back of the eagle's neck. The Garrett-Guth gold Encyclopedia comments of this issue, "The date is rarer than most of the Charlotte and Dahlonega issues of the 1840s and 1850s. Only about two dozen 1862 half eagles have crossed the auction block in the last two decades. Mint State examples of the date are very rare and underrated ... " The appealing surfaces are orange-gold, and the eye appeal is considerable. Another piece of equal quality and eye appeal might take many years to surface. Population: 2 in 58, 1 finer (9/06).
