1799 1C --Corroded--ANACS. Good 4 Details. S-189, B-3, R.2. The design elements are well worn but most of them are still visible, except near the peripheries. This deep red-brown example displays moderate corrosion throughout. Walter Breen said of the 1799 issue, in his Encyclopedia of U.S. Large Cents, that: "This is the most famous date of the series except for 1793 and is certainly the rarest." EAC 2.

1799 1C --Corroded--ANACS. VG10 Details. S-189, B-3, R.2. 179 of the date evenly spaced, but the 9's are closer, and the die chip between the E in ONE and the T in CENT just barely shows. When viewed with the naked eye, the medium to dark brown surfaces appear to be relatively smooth. Under magnification, light evenly distributed porosity is visible on the obverse, while the reverse is somewhat more moderately porous. This does not significantly affect the design elements which are generally clear, except for the bowknot that is partially obliterated. A couple of faint pinscratches on Liberty's cheek are mentioned for accuracy, and help to pedigree the coin. Despite the impairments, this is not a bad key-date representative that will fit well into a low to mid-grade Large cent collection. EAC 5. (PCGS# 1443)

1875-S 20C MS66 NGC. Breen-3875, Doubled "$" Mintmark; MPD-001, Misplaced Date. The top of a digit, likely a 5, is seen in the denticles below the 7 in the date. The mintmark is sharply recut, and exhibits two pairs of serifs. Hints of gold color grace this outstanding type coin, which possesses potent luster and an above-average strike. The reverse has several slender peripheral die cracks, as made. Census: 41 in 66, 5 finer (12/06). (PCGS# 5298)

1885 G$1 MS66 Prooflike NGC. A superb and thoroughly delectable example of this issue, one that, despite its relatively high mintage of more than 11,000 pieces, is surprisingly unavailable in grades above Gem. This specimen offers superlative black-on-gold contrast, as thick mint frost coats the devices on each side. Even under a loupe, there are no remotely mentionable contact marks. The strike is sharp, with no apparent weakness, and as a further bonus, none of the irregular rims sometimes seen on this issue are noted. An irresistible type coin! Dazzling luster adorns both sides of this beautiful yellow-gold eagle, and a powerful strike emboldens the design elements, including excellent delineation in the Indian's hair and the eagle's plumage. The grainy-like finish that is typical of the 1915 adds further appeal to the coin. A couple of unobtrusive obverse handling marks are all that stand in the way of a significantly higher grade. A simply gorgeous example for the grade designation!

Encased 1878-S Morgan Silver Dollar, Buick Automobile Advertisement. A superb example of this popular encased dollar, believed to have been sold or given away during the 1939-40 New York World's Fair. This has to be one of the nicest of the type we have seen. The dollar only has the slightest bit of rub that must have come from sitting in a drawer, with a pristine outer ring. A wonderful piece to add to one's encased coin collection.

Wear is uneven because of a wave in the planchet. The date is sharp, while the upper half of the tree is worn smooth. A couple of thin marks are noted near the date. 1652 SHILNG Pine Tree Shilling, Large Planchet VF25 NGC. Noe-1, Crosby 12-I, R.2. 63.4 grains. A smooth and gently wavy dove-gray piece with pleasing detail for the designated grade. Out of round due to a mint-made clip along the right border, and edge flaws at 12 and 6 o'clock. Noe-1 survivors appear to be evenly divided into two die states: early without breaks, and late dies with reverse breaks, most notably between the 16 in the date. The present piece is from late dies. 1652 SHILNG Pine Tree Shilling, Large Planchet AU58 NGC. Pellets at trunk. Noe-1, Crosby 12-I, R.2. 71.5 grains. This is classic die pairing desired by most type collectors as it captures the classic look of Massachusetts silver with the large, well made and smooth planchets. These were apparently struck on the rocker press used for the Oak Tree issues, and therefore the planchets show the familiar "S" shaped bend in the flan. The coins were struck on strips of silver, then hand cut by large shears which created uneven edges. On the present coin, there is a minor void on the edge at 3 o'clock on the obverse, and the obverse is struck off center toward the bottom as nearly always encountered. Die clashing below the tree. A later die state, with the reverse die crack spanning the reverse horizontally through the center with several lumps. Gorgeous old dark to medium gray toning, with excellent surfaces that reveal few signs of handling and no significant disturbances. A faint pin scratch spans the center of the reverse from the upper left to lower right. A desirable coin that any collector will long appreciate. Listed on page 37 of the 2007 Guide Book. (PCGS# 23)

1652 SHILNG Pine Tree Shilling, Small Planchet--Double Struck--VF25 PCGS. Noe-29, R.3. An interesting example of this relatively common variety in the Small Planchet shilling series. This piece is double struck, as stated on the insert; undoubtedly from a second, off-centered pass through the cylindrical dies mounted in a screw press--a radical departure from the method of manufacture used on the earlier Willow Tree coinage. At least half the letters on each side are off the planchet. The surfaces are attractive and original with dark blue-gray patina in the fields and contrasting brilliantish-silver accents over the devices. A pleasing, problem-free coin. (PCGS# 24)

(1694) TOKEN London Elephant Token, Thick Planchet MS65 Brown NGC. Breen-186, Hodder 2-B. This is the common thick planchet variety with the reverse legend GOD PRESERVE LONDON and the sword in the first quadrant of the shield to the upper left. It is a sharply struck and nicely centered example with smooth olive and steel-brown surfaces that retain traces of original red color hidden among the devices on each side. Slight planchet defects are evident at the left and right obverse border, as struck. Although Elephant tokens are not particularly rare in Mint State grades, they are almost never seen in Gem quality. (PCGS# 55)

The King's cheek exhibits highpoint friction, but this well struck olive and golden-brown representative approaches a Mint State grade. There are no troublesome marks. Although PCGS gives the pedigree as Roper, this piece is unlisted in the 12/1983 Stack's auction of his collection. Listed on page 40 of the 2007 Guide Book. (PCGS# 113)
