Bidding Open for Long Beach Auctions
Heritage has been holding Official Auctions at Long Beach for a quarter century, setting record after record, wonderful auction after wonderful auction. Our auctions at the Long Beach Coin Expo have a reputation as one of the hobby's most enjoyable traditions. Next month, the tradition continues with our 2009 September Long Beach, CA Signature US Coin Auction, to be held on September 10-13 in Long Beach and over the Internet at www.HA.com/Coins.
This auction contains a wonderful array of neat rarities, and is accompanied by equally exciting auctions of Currency and World Coins. Some 600 Long Beach consignors have demonstrated their trust in Heritage, delivering their numismatic treasures so we can deliver the highest prices in the market. In Long Beach (and the subsequent Final Session offerings) we will be auctioning about 10,000 numismatic rarities.
Next year, Heritage will be able to provide even better service to the enthusiastic collectors of Southern California with our new luxurious facility in Beverly Hills. One of the most important global collecting communities will soon have daily, personal access to Heritage staff.
A few of the many highlights of our Long Beach US Coin Signature Auction include:
With so many numismatic items from which to choose, you will be spending plenty of research time in our free Auction Archives, which contain detailed full-color images, lot descriptions, and prices realized for some 1.7 million numismatic items sold in prior auctions. This continues to be the most useful resource on the Internet — a veritable pricing library at your free disposal to maximize your bidding successful.
This auction is open for bidding now at www.HA.com/Coins.

Found Treasures: A Tale of Two Tails
By John Dale Beety
Much of this article originally appeared in the Heritage Blog.
On occasion, this space has seen comments about two-headed coins, most of which are made outside the mint and consequently are worth next to nothing, unless one happens to run into a frantic magician in search of precisely that prop. However, on very rare occasions, legitimate two-headed pieces will appear, such as the Washington Quarter struck with two reverse dies that we offered in 2006.
There's another fascinating error in the September 2009 Long Beach U.S. Coin Auction — a two-tailed coin that comes not from the United States, but across the pond: a one euro cent coin struck with two reverse dies, graded MS63 Red by NGC. It's an odd little coin, even more mysterious than the average two-headed or two-tailed coin (and that's saying something).
First of all, nobody knows where exactly it was made or when. Because this is a coin with two reverses, each side shows the "universal" reverse that is common to every coin in the one euro cent denomination, rather than the country-specific obverse. Thus, any country in the Eurozone that struck the denomination could have been its source.
Moreover, because the reverse design was static for a number of years, there is no date, either (though NGC correctly but not-so-helpfully suggests a date range from 2000 to 2007, which only manages to exclude a couple of years of coinage for the denomination). There's just so little information to go on that its place and time of origin likely will never be traced.
The two sides, though identical in design, can be distinguished in a fashion. On the obverse-scratch that, on the side that is aligned with the front side of the coin's holder-there is a small toning spot on one of the lines below the globe. On the other side, there is no spot in the area. Similarly, the areas of toning found elsewhere do not sync up.
Still, this euro cent error has induced plenty of double-takes, even among veteran numismatists. Whatever happens to it after the auction, whether it goes on to become part of a comprehensive error collection or simply settles down as a fascinating pocket-piece, it will command attention.

Website Tips: Five Things to Know About Heritage Live!TM
- LiveProxy — The LiveProxy feature allows you to quickly and easily enter bids to be placed
live before the auction begins (or before the respective lot has come up). These bids can be edited, changed, or
deleted up to the time the item goes live. LiveProxy will bid live for you to ensure your bids get through, and
if you are outbid while following the auction live, it allows you to continue bidding using the LiveBid button.
- Last minute bidding insurance — Heritage Live!TM offers you
a "second chance" to win. If you bid on HA.com and you are not winning when Internet bidding closes, you can still
win the lot by going to Heritage Live! and either leaving a LiveProxy bid as detailed above or bidding live once
the lot opens. If you have the winning Internet bid but are concerned you will get outbid during the live event,
you can put in a LiveProxy bid for a higher amount.
Or, if you watch the Live auction, you can place your bid directly against the floor. In either case, Heritage Live!
has automatic safeguards to prevent you from bidding against yourself! It's an additional opportunity for you to win
even if you don't attend the Live Auction.
- Extend bid (exclusive to Heritage Live!) — Tired of losing by just one bid increment? Heritage
Live! lets you specify that we can increase your bid by one increment if it is necessary to win the lot.
- Cut Bid — Once per lot, exactly the same as if you were on the auction floor, you may place a
bid equal to half the increment the auctioneer calls for. Savvy bidders can save themselves money in their
purchases with well-timed cut bids. Use the Cut Bid button to place your cut bid.
- Disable Live Bidding — If you merely want to watch the auction and not chance an ill-placed
click while an item valued at more than your annual salary is up for bidding, you can turn off live bidding! And,
if the item you're looking for is about to come up, you can always turn it back on.

We're well aware here at Heritage that our clientele are some of the most interesting, influential people around, and all of you come with a story. Now we want you to tell us just what that story is. We're looking for stories that can wow, make us laugh or cry, or otherwise remind us why we collect what we do. We would like to share these stories with the rest of the Heritage community, so this is an open call and a chance for you to tell your story.
Submission Guidelines:
- Send submissions to CollectorsCorner@HA.com (You can also send ideas for other topics.)
- Submissions should be no more than 2,000 words
- Select submissions will be published anonymously by Heritage on the Heritage Blog, in company e-mails and in web promotion. All submissions are subject to editing and proofing. The author's name will remain confidential.

Reduced Auction Commissions When You Resell Your Winnings!
When you win any lot worth with a hammer price of $1,000 or more (or $2,500 for Art and Natural History lots), you will receive a coupon that entitles you (or your heirs) to re-consign that lot to Heritage at a reduced seller's commission. Selling through Heritage is a convenient and hassle free way to maximize your return (find out why). Maybe you'll need to make room in your collection for something better, perhaps your collecting tastes will change, or maybe it will be your heirs that benefit; but be sure to save the coupon, which could be worth hundreds or thousands of dollars.
- Coins: 0% Seller's Commission for all items $1K or more.
- Comics: 50% of the usual Seller's Commission for all items between $1K & $10K, and 0% for items $10K and over.

The Freedom Collection Of Baseball Cards
A private collector with a concentration in rare and pristine Hall of Fame baseball cards has chosen Heritage Auction Galleries' Oct. 1 Signature® Sports Auction to present 40 of the rarest and most valuable specimens to the collecting hobby.
"It absolutely ranks among the finest private collections of high-end cards in the world," said Chris Ivy, Director of Sports Auctions for Heritage Auction Galleries, "Only the most iconic names in baseball history are represented, and each of the 40 cards rate among the highest graded available."
Estimated at more than $1.2 million for just the 40 cards, The Freedom Collection of Elite Baseball Trading Cards will provide the early fireworks to the event, leading off the auction, which features well in excess of 1,200 lots of rare and valuable trading cards and sports memorabilia. While the consignor of the Freedom Collection has chosen to preserve his anonymity, the legends pictured on the cards require no introduction.
"Ty Cobb, 'Shoeless Joe' Jackson, Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle and Willie Mays are just a few of the names featured," said Ivy, "and in each case, the player's most important and/or valuable card is presented. It's rare to have a single six-figure card in an entire auction, and there are several examples in this small but special collection."
"Sports fans around the world are going to want to participate in this event," Ivy said, "and I'd encourage everyone to visit our homepage at www.HA.com/Sports, where they'll see enlargeable, full-color images of each and every lot and they will have an opportunity to place bids online when the auction launches on Sept. 10."
The trading card portion of the auction will end on Thursday, Oct. 1 in an Extended Bidding format, each lot closing individually after 30 minutes of bidding inactivity following the 10 PM CT cut-off. The memorabilia will be sold Oct. 2 in a Live auction format beginning at 12 noon CT, with bidders able to participate in person, by telephone, or online at www.HA.com/Live.

Lest it go unsaid, as it too often does, I just wanted to write and say Thank you. I am very pleased with the results thus far, and feel that my reliance upon your guidance and advice about certain critical questions has been well placed. You know your business. And, from this client's perspective, you are tending to your job meticulously.
I know that Heritage is a force-- obviously some brilliant and creative minds have been at work building/improvising its business model. It seems to me an enlightened kind of situation, because it is doing very well for itself by providing good service and genuine value to the clients who entrust it with things not only of value, but dear to them.
