Each lot of the collection will contain an entire set, including sets dating as early as 1856, and a 1890 set which includes not only the six silver and minor coins struck during the year, but also the four gold coins!

A World of Money: The Dot

Canadian 1936 Dot Cent
Canadian 1936 Dot Cent
Our upcoming 2010 January Signature World Coin Auction features quite a number of great coins, but none are as famous as the legendary Canadian 1936 Dot Cent. This coin, struck in 1937 prior to the creation of coinage dies for George VI but never released for circulation, has seen its reputation grow exponentially since its discovery.

In early 1936, Great Britain's George V passed away and was succeeded by his son King Edward VIII. As was common practice, for the remainder of 1936 the coinage continued to have the effigy of King George V. Toward the end of the year, and throughout the British Commonwealth coinage, models were made and dies produced with the effigy of King Edward VIII, but upon Edward's abdication the dies were no longer valid and a severe shortage of Canadian 1, 10, and 25 Cent pieces arose in early 1937. Because of the shortage, Canada was forced to continue producing coins dated 1936 with the portrait of King George V. Canadian authorities felt a need to distinguish this 1937 mintage from the 1936 production and a small Dot was placed on the reverse of the 1, 10, and 25 Cent coins. The dot is under the date on the 1 Cent coin, and under the bow on the wreath of the 10 and 25 Cent coins. History tells us that only the 25 Cent piece was placed in circulation and that three pieces of the Dot Cents, and four pieces of the Dot 10 Cents are the only surviving examples.

Canadian 1936 Dot Cent
The 1936 Dot cent was long considered essentially uncollectible, since noted numismatist John Jay Pittman had held all three known examples from 1961 until his death, but the three-part auction of his collection brought all three back onto the market: the first in October 1997 and the other two (including this piece) in August 1999. The three 1936 Dot Cents, now well-scattered, generate great excitement whenever one appears on the auction block.

This exceptional rarity, graded Specimen 66 Red by PCGS was lightly lacquered at the Mint to preserve the original Mint color and prevent damage to the coin's surfaces. This seems to have been successful as the coin is basically flawless with full golden-red original color. There are a few light brownish streaks, which appear to be from aging of the lacquer rather than toning of the coin. Also apparent are a few noticeable striations caused by heavy polishing of the die prior to striking the coins. This is the finest of the three pieces extant.

This auction is scheduled for January 3-4 in New York City and on the Internet through HA.com/Coins and Heritage Live.

Website Tips: New Search Options

Our targeted search provides a wealth of options that allow you to search for just the coins you want! Start your search with a keyword, such as 1909-S, and a denomination, like Lincoln Cents, and from there you can narrow down your search until you see just the coins you're looking for.

search

Now, we've added new options for how your keyword is handled:

  • Titles. This is the default search, and will look for an exact match of the keyword in the item's title (basically the first few words of the lot's description). It may match other attributes of the item, as well.

  • Titles and Descriptions. This search allows you to look through the entire description of the item. This is useful for looking for varieties, pedigrees, and sometimes attributes of the items that will not show up in the short description.

  • Lot Number. Just what it sounds like - this allows you to search for an item by lot number.

  • US Coin Year (new). Because the default search is for exact matches, there was previously no way to look for just items minted in the same year, regardless of mint; you had to do three different searches to look for 1947, 1947-D, and 1947-S coins. Now, you can enter 1947 as a keyword, choose to search for "US Coin Year", and you'll see all items minted in that year. World coin collectors take note - we are working on adding information so that you'll be able to look for your coins this way as well!

  • PCGS Number (new). If you know the exact PCGS number of the coin, use it as a keyword, and choose this from the dropdown. You will see only coins with that exact PCGS number. Our catalogers love this one!

Singular Black Cat Movie Poster Brings $334,600 As Part Of $2 Million+ Heritage Auctions Event

The only known Style B one-sheet movie poster for the 1934 Universal classic horror movie, The Black Cat, brought $334,600 as part of Heritage Auctions' Nov. 12-13 Signature Vintage Movie Posters Auction. Total prices realized for the event, including 19.5% buyer's premium, surpassed the $2 million mark.

"The graphically spectacular red, black and white stone lithograph Black Cat movie poster is that rare collectible that transcends its genre," said Grey Smith, Director of Vintage Movie Posters at Heritage Auctions. "Yes it's a gorgeous movie poster, but it also carries great appeal as a piece of art, as a piece of pop culture and as an important piece of cinematic history. There's no other movie poster like it in the world, as far as we know, and it's worth every cent paid for it."

The poster came to Heritage from renowned collector Todd Feiertag, whose collection also supplied the copy of The Mummy, which sold for $453, 500 in 1997 at a different auction house. The $334,600 price paid for the poster ties it for fourth place overall on the all-time list of top-selling movie posters, tied with a Style D one sheet for the Bride of Frankenstein, sold at Heritage Auctions in November 2007.

The Black Cat was the first collaboration between Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi, and many would argue their best. As a side note it is worth mentioning that Karloff's costume from The Black Cat recently sold for more than $89,000 to lead Heritage Auctions Nov. 6-7 20th Century Icons auction, a solid testament to the enduring popularity of the film, its stars and the desirability of any type of memorabilia associated with it.

Lugosi's stardom lent its heft to the second top lot in the auction, a 1932 half-sheet for United Artists' White Zombie, in which Lugosi gives one of his greatest, most chilling performances as Murder Legendre, an inscrutable man who holds sway over the natives in his Haitian stronghold. The poster survives in remarkable condition, and is one of only two known examples of the half-sheet poster for this important horror film. It sold for $53,775.

"As ever, classic horror is the top in the world of vintage movie poster collecting," said Smith. "Heritage Auctions' has worked diligently to find and offer collectors the very best examples in the world, like The Black Cat Style B movie poster. It was a thrill to auction this poster, certainly, and we can't wait to see what turns up next."

A Citizen Kane (RKO, 1941) Style B one sheet movie poster was the auction's top non-Horror lot, and number three overall, as it soared to $33,460. Orson Welles' controversial masterpiece is undeniably one of, if not the single greatest movie of all time, and original posters associated with the film are highly desirable to top collectors. The rare Style B one sheets, such as this example, are particularly highly prized.

Three magnificent Italian premiere displays for The Good, The Bad and the Ugly (PEA, 1966) captured the attention of top level collectors with its iconic "Man With No Name" imageryand brought an equally impressive $33,460 price tag, while an equally iconic image of Jane Russell as the ultimate pin-up in a rare six-sheet for The Outlaw (United Artists, 1943), the single most controversial film of the 1940s, carved its place in pop culture a little deeper as it realized $29,875.

  Letter of the week

Thank you ever so much for 'The Collector's Handbook', which I've just finished reading through. I will put it with my collection, and it will spur me on to finish the annotated catalogue I'm working on of my own collection. When I have more time I'll be in touch with the appropriate person re ultimate disposition of my collection. I definitely want my heir/s to sell it; I will not donate it. I will have to decide between auction or dealer/s; your excellent book will help me decide.

Thanks again!
