Description
Extremely Rare Miller 4.2-F.6 1785
African Head Connecticut Copper
1785 COPPER Connecticut Copper, African Head VF30 NGC. M.
4.2-F.6, W-2360, R.8. There are two distinct die pairs of 1785
Connecticut copper described as the "African Head." The first,
Miller 4.1-F.4, is a common variety that offers considerable supply
to meet the demand. The Miller 4.2-F.6, on the other hand, is
extremely rare. The entry in the Whitman Encyclopedia of
Colonial and Early American Coins states of the latter:
"Discovered by Eric P. Newman (CNL, January 1972).
Rarity: URS-2."The Colonial Newsletter reference is a citation of personal correspondence between Edward R. Barnsley and Eric P. Newman, which was dated April 21, 1966, tantalizingly close to the March 29, 1966 acquisition date of this piece. Newman's discovery was that the reverse paired with the Miller 4.2 African Head obverse is not the F.4 reverse paired with the Miller 4.1 African Head, but a different type with the colon after CONNEC well-separated from the shield. Newman's correspondence describes having reviewed the two known examples, and the "URS-2" rarity rating suggests that the population remains at two. Further research is needed to determine whether this was one of the two coins Newman reviewed or a previously unknown third specimen.
The present example is a glossy brown coin with reddish-gold overtones and a small planchet flaw to the left of the lips. Moderate wear has left all of the essential features intact. Listed on page 59 of the 2011 Guide Book. MRB Fine 15.
Purchased from R.T. Hoober (3/29/1966). Handwritten note: "unlisted rev / unlisted combo".
