Exceptional 1895 Dollar, PR68 Cameo
1895 $1 PR68 Cameo NGC. The 1895 Morgan dollar has been an object of great desire for many decades, and the mysterious alleged production of 12,000 business strikes, with none ever verified by numismatic experts, has only compounded that desire. The year 1895 has a special cachet all its own. Just as the 1879-CC, 1889-CC, and 1893-CC dollars constitute the "great triumvirate" of key-date CC-mint dollars, so the year 1895 boasts three issues, each incredibly difficult in its own right: the 1895 proof-only dollars; the 1895-O, which is one of the most intriguing and elusive Morgans in Gem condition; and the 1895-S which, while also a condition rarity, is the most available of the three.Although earlier there was doubt concerning the possible existence of business strike 1895 dollars, Q. David Bowers' most recent utterances on Morgan dollars have shown capitulation on the issue. In the 2006 Buyer's Guide to Silver Dollars & Trade Dollars of the United States, third edition, Bowers writes:
"Called 'the King of Morgan Dollars,' the 1895 is known to me only in Proof or impaired Proof form. I have never seen a business strike. It is believed that the 12,000 reported business strikes of the date represent an accounting entry error, and were never struck, or as mentioned earlier, probably were dated 1894. Recent research indicates the latter scenario is true."
Bowers continues his commentary on the 1895 proof dollars by saying that typical "nice" grades are PR63 through PR65. If that is so, the present PR68 Cameo piece must be put in the category of "marvelous." The silver-white, radiantly mirrored fields and thickly frosted devices verge on an Ultra Cameo designation and, as expected for the Superb Gem level, there is absolutely no visible distraction of even the most minute sort.
While several hundred 1895 proof Morgan dollars still exist today, precious few approach the quality of the present specimen. In PR68 Cameo this piece is one of seven so certified at NGC, and there are four PR68 Ultra Cameos at that service. All of these pieces are tied for numerically finest, with the sole exception of a PR69 Ultra Cameo NGC example (2/09). PCGS has certified a single Deep Cameo in PR68.
