Description
Enchanting Royal Portraiture in Gold
Victoria gold pattern Crown ND (1887), Young Head style after William Wyon's renowned portrait, plain edge, 40.5 mm diameter, ESC-342A, rated R7 (1 or 2 known), struck in Nuremberg, Germany, by the die-sinking firm of L.C. Lauer, PR64 Ultra Cameo "Ex Murdoch Collection" NGC, and in fact a beautiful and obviously choice specimen exhibiting brilliant reflective luster, richly toned in reddish golden hues, and showing only faint hairlines but no abrasions or even the slightest edge bruising. This piece features a lovely, large portrait of Queen Victoria as a young monarch, uncrowned but her hair bound with two fillets, each without ornamentation, ending in a pony tail, closely copied from the Wyon design struck in London at the beginning of the reign. A flat six-pointed star appears centered below the portrait. The reverse motif consists of the Order of the Garter crest supported by a crowned lion and a unicorn in chains, surrounded by an intricately detailed bowed wreath. On each side, a ring of beads outlines the raised rim, which is sharply squared off. Designer remains unknown, or unverified, as the artist did not sign the dies for this piece. All in all, this is exceptionally well preserved, with a fabulous provenance as noted on the grading insert. Of the highest rarity, an ultra-rare opportunity, and truly a prize for the ultimate crown collection. A spectacular coin!More information about Great Britain Coins.
