Description
Vibrant 1930-S Indian Head Eagle, MS66
The Floyd Starr Specimen
1930-S $10 MS66 PCGS. The 1930-S ten dollar gold piece
boasts a small mintage of 96,000 pieces. The reason for producing
coins of this denomination at all is a mystery to modern
numismatists, as they were clearly not needed in the regional
economy. No eagles had been produced at any of the mints since
1926, and no more coins of this denomination would ever be minted
at San Francisco. All examples seen today are in Mint State grades,
indicating that none of the mintage was released into circulation
at the time of issue. The great majority of the coins were held in
Treasury vaults until the Gold Recall of the mid-1930s, when they
were melted and stored as bullion at Fort Knox. Experts estimate a
surviving population of 125-140 examples of this date, all
preserved by coin collectors who saved them at the time of issue.
In A Handbook of 20th Century Gold Coins 1907-1933, David
Akers rates the 1930-S as the fourth rarest coin in the 32-coin
series in terms of absolute rarity. Both Walter Breen and David Akers tell of a small hoard of 1930-S eagles, probably from a single roll, that was dispersed in the San Francisco area. Breen relates that one coin would be released every three years, to avoid flooding the market. This supply has presumably been exhausted, and no other hoards are known.
The coin offered here is an extraordinary specimen of this elusive date. The surfaces display amazing, bright mint luster, and all design elements are sharply defined. Wide swathes of pale lilac and rose accent the lovely yellow-gold color of the pristine surfaces. Overall visual appeal is compelling. Only six coins have been certified at the MS66 level by NGC and PCGS combined, with three finer (2/09).
