Description
1793 S-8 Wreath Cent, MS63 Brown
Reverse on Crosby-Levick Plate
Tied for Third Finest Known
1793 1C Wreath Cent, Vine and Bars MS63 Brown NGC. S-8, B-13,
R.3. The famous Crosby-Levick plate, published in the
American Journal of Numismatics in April 1869, was the
earliest photographic reproduction of large cents. That plate
illustrated 12 obverse dies and 10 reverse dies. Since that
publication only four more dies have been discovered, three obverse
and one reverse. The Crosby-Levick plate was a remarkable
achievement for the time. Equally remarkable is that the
photography in 1869 was so good that coins can still be matched to
that plate. The S-8 or B-13 die marriage features the Horizontal Stem obverse die with a reverse showing a Triangular Bow, and a diagonal die bulge or (later) crack inside the wreath. The Del Bland Census published in Walter Breen's Large Cent Encyclopedia records two Mint State coins graded MS63 and MS60, followed by seven coins that he grades AU55, including the present specimen. Bill Noyes grades this specimen just AU50, and tied for eighth finest behind one MS63 and six AU55 coins. In our opinion, Bland and Noyes are both conservative with their grades for this specimen.
Both sides show lightly mirrored fields with sharp details and nice centering. The obverse is mahogany with wisps of pale blue and olive toning. The reverse has deeper reddish-brown and olive toning. A splendid specimen with no evidence of wear and exceptional eye appeal. Our EAC grade MS60.
