1796 Quarter, Richly Toned AU53
B-1, Low 6 Variety

1796 25C AU53 NGC. CAC. B-1, R.4. Some collectors choose to focus their collecting pursuits around solely the coins produced in a given year. This is certainly not a new phenomenon, although with the advent of Registry Sets of every conceivable stripe, it has intensified. Famed collector Harry X Boosel concentrated only on the large number of coins produced in 1873.
Another famous collector, John Whitney Walter (sometimes called John Whitney for short), was popularly known simply as "Mr. 1796." As advanced numismatists know, the year 1796 was a special one in U.S. coinage history. It was the first time that every authorized denomination was struck, from copper half cent to gold eagle--an event that would not recur for more than a half-century, until 1849. But all of the coins of 1796 are rare -- most of them famously so. The fabulous collection of Mr. 1796 was auctioned off by Stack's in May 1999. The 1796 No Pole half cent in the collection was graded "MS-64" and brought $275,000. Walter/Whitney's fabulous collection of 1796-dated coins included four 1796 quarters ranging from AU to BU (lots 1772-1775), which brought from $14,950 to $41,400.
This is a lovely example of the "Low 6" variety. Significant traces of mint luster remain around the devices. The obverse is moderately toned in shades of gray-rose in the center with deep green around the margin. The reverse, on the other hand, is much deeper in hue with the same basic colors present, just much more pronounced. The strike is sharp throughout, and only minor abrasions are noted.
