George III Pattern 2 Guineas 1768, S-3724A, Wilson & Rasmussen 79, PR64 CAM PCGS. This is the first date of the pattern 2 Guineas (there were also patterns struck in 1773 and 1777). Douglas-Morris has this described as PATTERN TWO GUINEAS by John Tanner, young laureate bust facing right, hair long and with lovelock over left shoulder, rounded truncation, laurel wreath with berries interrupts legend, GEORGIVS. III. DEI. GRA. Reverse crowned garnished shield of arms, date either side of crown, M.B.F.ET.H.REX.F.D.B.ET.L.D.S.R.I.A.T.RT.E. edge plain. It sold for £8,800 back in 1974. W & R has this listed as a Rarity 4 with 11-20 known. This piece is lightly toned and one of the most beautiful coins in the English series.
