Description

Famous 1856 Flying Eagle Cent, Snow-9, PR64

1856 1C PR64 PCGS. CAC. Snow-9. The usual proof variety, attributed by the short die scratch in the lower left ribbon end and the die crack at 11:30 on the reverse. Apricot-gold and olive with the occasional nearly microscopic fleck. Fully defined, as only a proof can be. Unabraded save for a trio of small marks below the AM in AMERICA. The fields are moderately reflective, as usually seen on 1856 cents. The Mint was obviously struggling with quality control in the early years of producing nickel alloy coinage and had difficulty maintaining a reflective surface in the fields. This struggle continued, and in fact, was aggravated several years later when the Shield nickel series was introduced. All in all, a pleasing, upper-grade example of this prototype Flying Eagle cent. Encapsulated in a green label holder.
