Description
A Rare 12800 Reis from the Bahia Mint
Joao V gold 12800 Reis Dobra 1730-B, KM141, second shield type, Russo #101, choice XF. Great details and sharp strike especially for a Bahia Mint issue. Very strong "B" and date, light circulation on the king's hair. Tower and mini-shields are complete (!) on the reverse. Some lamination on the reverse to the left of the crown and a tiny scratch to the right. Rims are perfect with some of the original "rope" rim still visible.Taking into account the 12800 Reis that were struck in mainland Portugal, Dobras from the Bahia Mint are by far the rarest of this type because gold was scarce in that region of Brazil. Most of the 12800 Reis were struck at the Minas mint, and, to a lesser extent, at the Rio mint. Adding to its rarity, the dies and striking were much cruder in Bahia making choice and defect-free coins such as this one even more difficult to find. We expect lively competition for this piece!
