Description
Gorgeous 1802 B-4 Dollar, MS62
The Davis-Graves Specimen
1802/1 $1 Narrow Date MS62 PCGS. B-4, BB-232, R.3.
Bowers-Borckardt Die State II, with a die crack beginning in the
obverse field near star 13, crossing the bust line above the
drapery, and terminating a short distance to the left. This is the
typical die state for the 1802/1 B-4 dollar. The specimen offered here is a true Condition Census candidate and is probably the third finest known. We offered the Queller Family specimen in April 2008, certified as MS63 NGC, and we have offered one other piece, an NGC MS61. In addition to those coins, an MS63 is recorded in the Bowers Silver Dollar Encyclopedia under notable specimens, a coin that appeared in a 1984 Stack's sale. The impressive Cardinal Collection had an AU58, and the Hesselgesser Collection on the PCGS Set Registry has an AU55.
This amazing Mint State piece has satiny silver luster beneath incredible, fully natural gray-gold toning with splashes of russet, blue, and violet. Both sides have bold design definition with the exception of a few obverse stars that are flat. The strike is nicely centered, with full, even borders. Minor abrasions are visible beneath the toning, but they are entirely consistent with the grade and of no concern.
The Davis-Graves Specimen was described in the 1954 Stack's catalog as "Lustrous and nicely toned, but struck weakly on left side. Unlisted die breaks on obverse make this coin so much the rarer. Left side of 8 recut. Reverse has proof-like surface. Not quite in 'gem' class. Uncirculated."
