Description

1873-CC Arrows Half, MS62
Very Rare in Uncirculated Grades

1873-CC 50C Arrows MS62 PCGS. WB-106. Large Mintmark. All WB-106 halves are Large Arrows variants and have the Open 3 punch in the date. Even though 214,560 pieces were struck, there are very few 1873-CC Arrows halves known in Uncirculated grades. The reason, of course, is a familiar one with Carson City and San Francisco coinage from the 19th and early 20th centuries: People in the western states were hard-money advocates and it took many years before paper money reached parity with silver and gold coins.
A number of years ago a hoard of 230 circulated 1873-CC halves was found, the so-called Orlando Hoard. This was a helpful find for collectors who collect circulated coins, but the number of Uncirculated coins has remained constant over the years. The supply is very thin of Mint State coins with only 27 grading events, representing 18 to 20 individual coins. This piece does not show the usually seen softness on the obverse that is normally seen on 1870-1874-CC halves. The surfaces are obviously original and exhibit medium density gray-rose toning over the expected thick mint frost. A rare opportunity for the Seated half collector. Population: 2 in 62, 11 finer (8/10).(Registry values: N4719)
