Description

Desirable XF Sharpness 1794 Dollar

1794 $1 --Obverse Repaired--NCS. XF Details. Ex: Moore-Gugenheimer. B-1, BB-1, R.4. Bowers-Borckardt Die State III with shortened curls from a Mint attempt to efface clash marks, which are still evident on the field near the mouth and beneath the jaw. As a rule, silver dollars from this year are rarely offered at public auction, and the demand for these coins far outdistances the supply. This particular coin is whizzed, and stars 13 and 14 are affected by a repair. A planchet flaw near star 8 has been wiped, and a second (and lesser) planchet flaw is concealed within the lower hair curls. Numismatists for many generations have been willing to accept or overlook these defects, as this piece has been in major collections since the 1870s. The surfaces are medium gray with much lighter accents over the highpoints on the reverse. Weakly struck on the obverse stars, as always, with the left side of the reverse also weak from having been struck from misaligned dies. The only mentionable abrasion is a diagonal scratch across the eagle's neck that continues into the field below. A well detailed and historic 1794 dollar, listed on page 102 of the 2004 Martin Logies reference, The Flowing Hair Silver Dollars of 1794.
