Near-Select Major General Alexander Macomb Medal
Julian-MI-16, Late Die States

Major General Alexander Macomb Medal, Julian-MI-16, MS62 Uncertified. Bronzed copper, 65 mm, 138.8 gm. Dies by Moritz Fürst. Obverse bust right, legend around MAJOR GENERAL ALEXANDER MACOMB, FURST.F. beneath truncation of bust. There is noticeable die rust at the juncture of the collar bottom and shoulder, and at the bottom of the coat near the rim at 6 o'clock. FURST.F. is faint (although all letters are readable), with only part of the first letter, the T, the two periods, and a portion of the last F plain. Reverse battle scene at Saranac River and Lake Erie naval battle, legend around and in exergue RESOLUTION OF CONGRESS NOVEMBER 3. 1814. BATTLE OF PLATTSBURGH SEPT. 11. 1814., FURST.F. below.
This piece displays good luster throughout the mahogany-brown surfaces, and the only post-Mint distraction is a minuscule tick on the obverse rim at 3 o'clock. More die rust appears on the reverse rims at 10 and 2. A tiny commalike die gouge appears at the lower left of the U in RESOLUTION (and possible reengraving on the left stem?). Julian notes that this pair of dies, originally pressed into service in 1824, was still in use in September 1885, and the numerous signs of extensive die use on this wonderful and interesting medal point to its origin closer to the end of that long 60-year period.
