Description

Significant C. Bechtler Dollar
K-1, AU Details

(1831-34) G$1 C. Bechtler Dollar, 30G.--Improperly Cleaned--NCS. AU Details. K-1, R.4. This variety is important because it represents the first gold dollar produced in the United States. Christopher Bechtler began striking these pieces as early as 1831--a full 18 years ahead of the U.S. Mint. Pale yellow patina coats the minimally abraded surfaces, with a touch of lilac around the devices. The strike is slightly off-center, as often seen, and about half of the dentils are missing. A few tiny retained laminations are noted on each side. This lightly cleaned AU piece would make a nice example of this historic issue. Listed on page 359 of the 2010 Guide Book.
