Description

Key Date Half Dobrao from Minas Gerais

Joao V gold 10000 Reis 1724M, KM116, MS62 NGC, fully lustrous with impeccably sharp design features. The 1724 10000 Reis (or Half Dobrao) is one of the key gold coins of colonial Brazil. Collectors of the elusive Dobrao series of the 1720's find out soon that the 1724 10000 Reis is by far the rarest coin of the denomination. We have previously sold a single piece in our May 2008 Long Beach auction (lot #50591). In XF details, lightly cleaned condition with a rim filing around 12 o'clock, that piece realized $34,500. This specimen is infinitely higher quality than the piece sold in 2008. It is a virtual Gem with faint hairlines, mainly on the reverse preventing a higher grade. The obverse is impeccable, almost prooflike. Difficult to imagine that a similar or better specimen might exist.
