1796 Draped Bust Dollar, AU50
Small Date, Large Letters, B-4, BB-61

1796 $1 Small Date, Large Letters AU50 PCGS. B-4, BB-61, R.4. The 1796 Draped Bust, Heraldic Eagle dollar enjoyed a substantial reported mintage of 79,920 pieces, and six die varieties are known for the date. The present coin is a representative of the more available BB-61 variety, characterized by the raised "dot" die lump over the 1 in the date and the eight berries in the wreath. The present coin shows a little softness in the details of the eagle's breast, but most design elements are strongly impressed and well preserved. A few light adjustment marks show on the bust, but the remainder of the blue-steel surfaces are remarkably free of distractions. Housed in an old green label holder. Population: 15 in 50, 23 finer (8/10).(Registry values: P4)

Coin Index Numbers: (PCGS# 6860, Greysheet# 7151)
