Description

Rare Very Fine 1801 Dime

1801 10C VF25 PCGS. JR-2, R.5. The Guide Book dutifully reports a mintage of 34,640 pieces for the 1801. But only two die varieties are known, and both are very scarce to rare in all grades. One way to attribute JR-2 is the presence of large Ts in STATES, unlike JR-1. The present impressive example has attractive golden-brown and aqua peripheral toning, and the eagle's wings are quite sharp despite the customary soft strike on Liberty's drapery, the eagle's neck, and the upper reverse stars. A brief pinscratch beneath the nose provides a pedigree identifier. Population: 3 in 25, 21 finer (4/06).(Registry values: P7)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 236J, PCGS# 4471, Greysheet# 3963)

Weight: 2.70 grams

Metal: 89.24% Silver, 10.76% Copper
