Description
Semi-Reflective MS63 1796 Dime, JR-3, Probably The Finest Known Of The Variety
1796 10C MS63 NGC. JR-3, R.5. This interesting variety shows the TY in LIBERTY touching on the obverse, with the leaves touching E3 and A3 on the reverse. While not the terminal die state, this is a late intermediate state that has a retained die cud over the first T in STATES. This particular coin does not show the planchet cut on the reverse rim where a small chip adhered to the die--a feature seen on many JR-3 dimes. The JR-3 variety is the second rarest of the year with only 5% or so of the 1796-dated dimes known from this die pairing. High grade examples are especially elusive, and this MS63 may well be the finest JR-3 known. The surfaces are mostly brilliant with a light accent of rose patina on each side. Liberty's hair curls are especially sharp as are the feathers on the eagle's breast, with the only area of softness being on several of the obverse stars. Bright mint luster, the fields show the often-seen semi-prooflike finish. This is often seen on early die states, but on this later state coin die polishing was probably employed to remove evidence of die clashing. The polishing was so vigorous on the reverse that portions of the eagle's left (facing) wing were lapped away, and there is also a spot that was overpolished on one of the lower right leaves on the wreath. An interesting and well-preserved example of this popular first-year issue. From The Melrose Bay Collection.(#4461)(Registry values: P7)
