Description

Elusive 1889-CC Morgan, MS63

1889-CC $1 MS63 PCGS. It is the rarest and most desirable Carson City Morgan dollar coined from 1878 to 1893. The 1889-CC is seldom found in any Mint State grade, and even XF and AU coins are elusive. Only 350,000 were struck in the last three months of the year, and nearly every one of those coins entered circulation. Despite occasional rumors of a single bag of 1,000 Mint State coins that may still exist, no hoards of this date have ever surfaced. In the early and middle 20th century, small groups appeared from time to time, and those groups were normally only a roll at a time. The appearance of such individual rolls of Mint State coins from the 1930s to the 1950s is apparently the source of all such pieces that exist today.
Writing in a Guide Book of Morgan Silver Dollars, Q. David Bowers considers MS63 to be the optimal collecting grade for this issue. We agree with that thought, but disagree with his estimated population of surviving pieces. Bowers suggests that as many as 9,000 Mint State 1889-CC Morgan dollars still exist, a figure that we consider substantially high.
This lovely piece has satiny silver luster with full white brilliance on both sides. A few tiny surface marks are consistent with the grade, and most evident on the obverse. The design motifs are sharp and fully defined, included complete hair over Liberty's ear and full breast feathers. Population: 68 in 63, 31 finer (1/08).
