Description
Exceptional 1868 Indian Head Cent, MS66 Red
1868 1C MS66 Red PCGS. With a large mintage of more than 10 million pieces, the 1868 Indian Head cent was not considered scarce at the time of issue. Few business strikes were saved at the time, as advanced collectors usually just purchased proof specimens from the Mint to represent the date. The issue was subjected to extensive melting in the years before 1874, greatly reducing the availability of Mint State specimens. Most examples seen today are in lower circulated grades. At the Premium Gem level, coins are rare today, especially with full red color. Only six coins have been certified in MS66 Red by NGC and PCGS combined, with none finer (4/09).The present coin is a pleasing example, with a sharp, but not quite full strike. The obverse is just a bit brighter than the reverse, which is a deep cherry-red. Overall visual appeal is excellent.
