Description

Amazing 1868 Cent, MS66 Red

1868 1C MS66 Red NGC. Despite a mintage in excess of 10 million pieces, the 1868 cent is elusive in Mint State and particularly so with Red surface quality. Only six such coins appear at the Premium Gem level in the combined certified population, three each at NGC and PCGS, with none finer (5/08). The obverse of this example offers a luminous blend of orange, rose, and gold shadings, while the reverse has a more uniform sunset-orange and peach appearance. The smooth fields and well-defined central devices are carefully preserved, and the overall visual appeal offers a match for the technical quality. In sum, a highly impressive coin.
