Description

Choice Type Two 1854 Gold Dollar

1854 G$1 Type Two MS64 PCGS. A beautiful near-Gem of this coveted ephemeral gold type. Peach-gold and olive toning graces satiny and unmarked surfaces. James B. Longacre's small Indian Head was designed to cause a full strike for both the bust and the wreath. The high relief of the bust, however, led to softness of impression on the central portions of DOLLAR and the date. That, plus a propensity for prominent clashmarks within the wreath, may have led to the quick replacement of the Type Two design. In 1856, the Type Three design was introduced, based on the three dollar gold piece which had minimal striking issues.(Registry values: N7079)
