Description

1839 50C NO DRAPERY AU50 PCGS. A lovely example of this single-year design type. In 1839, three different half dollar designs were employed in coinage production. Early in the year, the Capped Bust design was produced for an unknown period of time. Soon, however, the Mint introduced the new Gobrecht Seated Liberty design, and later in the year this design was modified to add drapery at Liberty's elbow. Both sides have lightly abraded surfaces. Light silver color is visible at the central obverse and reverse, surrounded by deep blue and russet toning along the borders. The reverse has a heavy bulge inside the shield, and numerous die cracks, both radial and peripheral.
