Description
Desirable 1795 O-103 Half Dollar, XF40
1795 50C 2 Leaves XF40 PCGS. O-103, R.5. The O-103 represents an early use of Obverse 1 with a new reverse die. Like the 101 and 102 reverses, the 103 reverse represents a unique 1795 layout. Here it has a 10-7 berry arrangement, with one berry inside and one outside the right side of the wreath below the eagle's wing. The obverse has die cracks as described for O-101, while the reverse has light cracks through the right side of the I in UNITED, the first A in AMERICA, and the C in that word. A branch of the crack through A joins the tops of ME. In later die states, a piece has fallen from the die over these letters, forming a full rim break. A faint crack crosses the right facing wing, just right of the eagle's body.
This piece shows notably lustrous surfaces with a significant sheen of mint frost around the devices on both sides. Evenly worn on the design elements, and well balanced in both highpoint friction as well as color. Both obverse and reverse display rich blue-gray patina with silvery brightness that enlivens the colors. There are no mentionable abrasions on either side of this attractive half dollar.
Haseltine-20; Beistle 1b-B; Overton-10; Hilt 20-O; PCGS# 6052; Encyclopedia-4560.
Ex: Gerald Shertz; Sheridan Downey (7/2005).
