Description

Surprising Undated Lincoln Memorial Cent Fragment
Half a Grain, No Evidence of Wear

Undated Lincoln Memorial Cent--Struck on a 0.5 Grain Fragment--MS60 Brown PCGS. The holder says ".5GM," indicating half a gram, but considering how little metal is present (far from one-fifth or one-sixth of an entire coin, as dictated by half a gram versus the weight of a Lincoln cent), half a grain seems more likely. The front of this error offers few clues to what it is, but the back has parts of the letters in UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, enough to identify it as the top of the reverse of a Lincoln Memorial cent. With this information, the obverse can be seen in a new light, as the seemingly random lines there become the folds in Lincoln's jacket.
