Description

Richly Toned 1896-S Quarter, MS65, Ex: Richmond Collection

1896-S 25C MS65 NGC. Ex: Richmond Collection. Obverse Die 2, Reverse Die 2. It is a backhand compliment to the rarity of the 1896-S quarter that coins have been altered to simulate this S-mint. Legitimate S-mint quarters from 1892 through 1897 have a distinctive rectangular shape, while those made after 1897 have a rounder appearance. Only two date and mintmark positions are known, and as a general rule most of the genuine 1896-S quarters have horizontal clash marks inside Liberty's ear.
The 1896-S is very scarce in XF and better grades, and Mint State pieces are always in demand by advanced collectors of this series. Unlike many '96-S quarters, this piece shows only slight reflectivity in the fields. The surfaces have bright, sparkling mint luster that is readily apparent even through the rich golden-rose and blue speckled toning that covers both obverse and reverse. A few tiny marks can be made out through the toning with a magnifier, but these are of no consequence to the technical grade or appearance of this important quarter. Sharply defined on each side, there are no mentionable areas of weakness. An outstanding example of this key date quarter with an impressive pedigree to match.(Registry values: N7079)
