Description
Brilliant Gem 1895 Morgan Dollar, PR66 Cameo
1895 $1 PR66 Cameo NGC. Production of silver dollars in 1895 was less than spectacular, creating rarities for today's collectors. According to Mint records published in the Director's Annual Report, the Philadelphia Mint coined 12,880 silver dollars, including 880 proofs. In New Orleans the total mintage was 450,000, while San Francisco contributed 400,000 pieces. This is the only year from 1878 through 1921 that the total annual production was less than 1 million coins. While 12,000 business strikes were reportedly coined at Philadelphia, none have ever surfaced. It is now believed that the business strike mintage record is merely an accounting entry for coins that were actually produced in 1894. Today, every known example is a proof, including those pieces that show evidence of circulation. It is believed that almost every 1895 proof Morgan dollar sill survives today. Contemporary collectors acquired these proofs at the time of issue, having no other option. The few high-grade 1895-O and 1895-S pieces that exist are most likely pieces that were obtained by Southern and Western collectors at the time they were issued. Most of the latter pieces entered circulation, and neither was represented by any quantity stored in Treasury vaults.
This example, a Premium Gem Cameo, has deeply mirrored fields and highly lustrous devices with mostly brilliant silver surfaces that are enhanced by faint champagne toning. A few faint hairlines are evident, but the overall quality and aesthetic appeal are above reproach. Census: 12 in 66 Cameo, 18 finer (1/07).(Registry values: N10218)
