Description

Rare Proof 1858 Three Dollar

1858 $3 --Altered Surface--NCS. Proof. 1858 was the first year that proofs were sold to the general public, although mintage figures went unreported until 1859. It is unknown how many 1858 proofs were struck, but in the 2005 Q. David Bowers and Douglas Winter standard reference for the denomination, they state "proofs are exceedingly rare, and only seven or eight are believed to exist, at least three of which are in museums." The present specimen is razor-sharp and offers pleasing cameo contrast, but the obverse field is glossy and the right reverse border is lightly hairlined.(Registry values: P6)
